Molly Huddle is the first person to win the United Airlines NYC Half three times in a row—and she did it by just two steps.
On Sunday, Huddle ran the race side-by-side with her training partner Emily Sisson—who was making her half marathon debut—and out-kicked her to take the win in 1:08:19. Both Huddle and Sisson passed the 5K mark in 16:59 with a pack of world champions and Olympians close behind, including 2016 USA Olympic Trials Marathon champion Amy Cragg.
It wasn’t until the 15K mark that they began to pull away, with Huddle making her kick with 400m left and Sisson unable to respond. Huddle crossed the finish line 2 seconds before Sission, who now holds the fastest women’s half-marathon debut ever by an American.
The men’s race was a nail-biter as well, with Feyisa Lilesa taking the win over Scotsman Callum Hawkins by steps, crossing the line in 1:00:04.
