Rock bands have generally disappeared from the cultural landscape. As I write this, there are just two bands classified as rock groups that appear on Billboard’s top 20 songs: 5 Seconds of Summer and Maroon 5. With tastes in recent years focusing on dance and rap tracks, tempos have shifted consistently downward as a result. To that end, if you’re looking for fast songs, you typically have to explore beyond the Hot 100. In the list below, that’s exactly what we’ve done.

The list kicks off with a Regrettes song that balances influences from both punk and 1960s girl groups and closes out with a blistering 198 BPM single from New York City darlings Interpol. In between, you’ll find inclusions from famous guitarists Johnny Marr from The Smiths and Daron Malakian from System of a Down. This playlist also includes a springy joint from M. Ward (who you may recognize as Zooey Deschanel’s counterpart in the duo She & Him) and an emphatic number from the genre-hopping master Mondo Cozmo.

Even if the tracks featured below are all rooted in rock, each does something a bit different with the genre. To that end, you can pluck your favorites or play it back from end to end. In either case, it’ll serve you well.

The Regrettes – Helpless – 164 BPM

Johnny Marr – My Eternal – 167 BPM

Ward – Return to Neptune’s Net – 153 BPM

The Get Up Kids – Better This Way – 152 BPM

Daron Malakian and Scars On Broadway – Dictator – 175 BPM

Mondo Cozmo – Tonight Tonight – 150 BPM

Parquet Courts – Total Football – 171 BPM

The Love Language – New Amsterdam – 173 BPM

DD Walker – Malibu – 184 BPM

Interpol – The Rover – 198 BPM
