When Amanda Schull isn’t preventing the end of the world from happening, she is exercising, running, dancing and staying healthy. From long hours of shooting 12 Monkeys on the SyFy channel to managing her time between working and workout out, she shares how she stays healthy and maintains an active lifestyle.

Women’s Running: As an actress who is constantly on the go, how do you balance the long hours of your job with exercising and healthy eating?

Amanda Schull: I try to slip exercise in to my daily routine as much as possible. When I am shooting long hours it can be difficult, especially when I have early call times. If I’m not able to attend a ballet or structured exercise class, I do my own exercise routine that consists of a Pilates mat class. I also bring an exercise band to set and do leg or arm work between scenes. Healthy eating is definitely a challenge when I’m not in control of all of my meals. I usually make myself a green smoothie in the morning to take to work, and then practice as much self-restraint as possible when craft services brings naughty snacks around

WR: With a background in ballet and dance, what is your favorite way to stay active right now? Is running one of the ways you stay active and if so, how did you start running?

AS: I still love ballet. I try to take classes when I can, it’s cathartic for me, and something my body continues to crave. I don’t run as much as I would like because of a back-injury. When I do run, I have to be very cautious about my posture. It’s quite frustrating that I can’t run more often because my husband is an avid runner, and even completed his first marathon last year at 2:51:31!

WR: What advice would you give to other women looking for ways to incorporate more fitness and health into their daily routine?

AS: I think that small choices can make a big impact over time. Simple things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator can encourage healthy changes. I also do weird little things like sneaking in some squats when I’m folding laundry or maybe get in a few angled push-ups when I have a spare minute of time.

WR: When you are on the go from one scene to the next, what are some of your favorite go-to snacks and healthy meal options?

AS: I often ask for cut vegetables and if I feel like I need some protein, I request a few slices of cheese. For a little sweet snack that isn’t super caloric, I get a sliced apple with almond butter.
