If you ever read my blog or we’ve met for more than five minutes, then you know that I am as obsessed with barre classes as I am with running. I started taking barre classes a couple of years ago and as I increased my running, I found myself ramping up barre classes as well. While I enjoy many types of fitness classes, I think that barre classes are the perfect complement to running. If you’ve been looking for something to balance out your training, let me suggest adding barre classes to your routine. Here are five reasons barre is perfect for runners:

  1. It is low impact. Running is a high impact sport. It’s important to balance all that pounding out and barre is great for that. Since it’s low impact, there is no added stress on your body from pounding. It also lacks the repetitive motion that you find with running. Low impact but highly effective = a win for runners!
  2. It is a full body workout. When you go to ta barre class, you know that you are going to work everything. From the warmup to arms to your core, back and legs—your full body is going to get an excellent workout. I especially appreciate the arm workout since that is an area that doesn’t get much attention while running. Barre classes also work all the smaller stabilizing muscles that can help you become a healthier, stronger runner.
  3. You will be forced to stretch. Let’s be real. Most of us (runners) are not so good at the stretching thing. Personally, it’s one of those things I know I need to do, but really just hate doing. In barre class, you will stretch after working every major muscle group and they feel awesome. It’s an excellent way to make sure you are getting your stretches in!
  4. You will become more flexible. This goes along with the stretching. When I started taking barre classes, my range of motion was essentially negative. Now, I can (almost) do the splits. It’s amazing how much a little added flexibility helps with running!
  5. It’s fun! This is of course one of the most important reasons I think you should give barre classes a try. After all, if you don’t love it, there’s no way you’ll ever be consistent. I love barre and how strong it helps make me. I think you might enjoy it as well!

Chances are there is a barre studio near you, and if not, you can always find classes online to try it out.
