‘Tis the season for trail running. Between crisp cool air and scenic vistas, the allure of off road running is in full force. For those seeking a total mind and body experience this autumn, consider lacing up to hit the trails for your next sweaty session. REI Sales Specialist Cyndi Stacy shares her top trail running tips to help you stay the course this season:
–Make time for yourself. As women assume the role of a natural caregiver, it can be difficult to carve out time to work-out. Remember, you deserve the time to train and invest in your own health. You’ve got one body – take care of it!
–Proper form is key. In order to enjoy a lifetime of running without suffering from knee and back pain, it is crucial to learn the correct running technique. Landing on the forefront area of your foot ensures your core is engaged safely.
–Invest in the right shoes for your stride. Since trail running requires navigation of uneven terrain, it is important to find a pair of shoes made specifically for off road adventures. Ask your sales associate for assistance to find the perfect shoe to support your gait.
–Carry hydration. Though cooler autumn temps can be deceptive, it is imperative to stay hydrated during a trail run. Aim to take in four to six ounces every 20 minutes as a general rule. Some options for carrying liquids with you during a run include a hydration pack, a handheld water bottle or a hydration belt with flasks.
-Always have a buddy. No matter how accomplished of a runner you are, anything can happen. You can twist your ankle, become disoriented, or get lost. Running with a friend not only ensures safety, it also allows you to share mother nature with someone else.
-Know the trail. Take time to learn the trail you are running. It is important to know the length, type of terrain and key landmarks to make sure you are on the right track.
