Kona 2009 139

During Ironman race week in Kona, I had the pleasure of catching up with good friend and exceptional
athlete Sarah Reinertsen. Among other claims to fame, Sarah was the first
female above-the-knee amputee to successfully complete the Hawaii Ironman race
(in 2005). Sarah was in town for a few days to promote her newly released
autobiography,
In a Single Bound. The
book details Sarah’s experience growing up with one leg and both challenging
and conquering any obstacles that stood in the way of her personal and athletic
success.

In addition to promoting her book, Sarah could barely contain her excitement about another
recent honor. Along with a selection of other sports superstars, Sarah graces
the cover of the October 19
th issue of ESPN Magazine. This is “The
Body Issue”, celebrating the athletic form, so it’s no surprise that Sarah
posed nude for the cover shot. She said the timing was perfect, after having
exposed herself emotionally through writing the book, to expose herself
physically as well. The resulting image is absolutely stunning – be sure to
check it out!
