This weekend, Nike host their Women’s Half Marathon Series in Washington D.C. The race, in it’s second year, took runners through the nation’s capital, where over 15,000 women crossed the finish line. The race started and finished on Pennsylvania Avenue. In between, the runners were treated to views of D.C.’s landmarks and monuments. At the end of the race, runners received a commemorative necklace designed with Tiffany & Co.
The Nike Women’s Half Marathon not only celebrates female runners, but they also benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) and their charity program Team in Training (TNT). TNT trained over 1,500 athletes who led fundraising efforts for the race.
Local Washington D.C. runner Kaitlin Sheedy won the race in a time of 1:20:56. Nike athletes Joan Benoit Samuelson and Shalane Flanagan were on hand to visit the expo and cheer on runners in the race.
If you are jealous you missed out on the race, Nike also has a Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco this fall. Registration opens later this spring.
