As the summer sun raises temperatures all around, you’re probably feeling in the heat in your run. Read our tips for keeping your cool and staying safe while running in hot weather.
–Hydrate Right. Hot temperatures = more sweat = greater loss of water. Make sure you replenish and rehydrate your body properly by making a conscious effort to drink more water throughout the day.
–Keep it lightweight. Wearing clothing that is made of wicking fabrics that allows air to circulate throughout will help keep your body temperature down. Ditch the cotton for tech material to stay comfortable!
–Plan Ahead. During the summer, it’s important to think about the time of day you set out for a run. Consider waking up earlier than normal to beat the sun, or lace up after sunset. Avoid mid-day runs when temps are at their peak!
–Ice cold. Before leaving for your summer run, wet a washcloth or small towel and place it in the refrigerator (for an extra cold treat, try the freezer!). As soon as you return from your run, wrap the towel around the back of your neck. The icy cloth will help bring your body temperature down faster while you cool off!
–Head Indoors. If mid-day running is you only option, think about using a treadmill for your workout. Though you might not love running on the hamster wheel, staying out of the heat will keep you more comfortable.
