Another of my favorite races, more or less in my back yard, is San Francisco’s Presidio 10. The event offers
both 10k and 10 mile options, and I ran the 10 miler soon after moving to the
east bay. The race, in mid-April, takes runners on a unique looped course,
starting and ending in Crissy Field, with varied terrain including trails,
asphalt, hills, flats and even some stairs. The highlight, however, is an out
and back portion across the Golden Gate Bridge, where runners come face-to-face
with challenging wind as well as spectacular views.
The race benefits two charitable organizations. Nationally, the Ashlyn Dyer
Foundation for Neurological Research aims to fund research and raise public
awareness about Traumatic Brain Injury. The Guardsmen is a Bay Area
organization devoted to providing disadvantaged youth an
opportunity to participate in both outdoor and indoor educational
opportunities.
If you’re looking for a destination race that’s challenging, yet not quite as
taxing as a half or full marathon, perhaps a trip to San Francisco in the springtime is exactly
the ticket you need!
