Channeling raw emotion into a healthy outlet requires dedication. Our latest Women’s Running magazine Blogger On The Run is no stranger to making purposeful choices for the happiness of herself and her family. Meet Heather from Mile 26 And More! This busy mom continues to chase down the runner’s high by completing marathons while balancing all of life’s demands. Learn why Heather’s #1 race tip involves starting slow:
WR: How would you describe yourself?
H: I’m a simple Cleveland girl who is striving to balance being a good mom and wife while working full-time, teaching at the gym, and marathon training. I love a good challenge, Chobani yogurt, Lululemon, Sperry’s, cupcakes, my iphone, and sleep (which I don’t get enough of). I always speak my mind and am without a doubt a goal-oriented person. Life is all about balance – give me a cupcake after my long run!
WR: How did you begin running?
H: I went through a divorce at a young age. I started running to get out all the aggression – I left it out on the road instead of bringing it home to my 2 year old son. I ran once around the block. Then twice. And never looked back!
WR: What keeps you running and training?
H: That runner’s high. Never fails. It always ropes me back in. Plus, I love being a good example for my son. I have always taught him to finish what he starts, so I can’t ever quit!
WR: What type of run is your favorite?
H: I am a newly converted track workout lover. The workouts just fly by – and I feel FAST (even if I’m really not)!!
WR: What’s your favorite race memory?
H: Crossing the finish line at the 2010 Cleveland Marathon was the best ever. It was the perfect weather, the perfect run, the perfect day. My husband and son were able to jump in and cross the finish line with me and that was just icing on the cake!
WR: Are you training for a special race right now?
H: I’m the run coach for this year’s Cleveland Team Liver Life Challenge. We’re running the 2013 Disney half, full, or Goofy Challenge. I can’t wait to help my team cross that finish line in January!
WR: How do you reward yourself for accomplishing your training/running goals?
H: If I’m working towards a big goal, or race PR, I’ll buy some race gear. I love sporting the gear I’ve picked up from the “special” races.
WR: Best running advice you’ve received or given?
H: Start slow. It’s a lot more enjoyable to have some energy left in the tank to pass all the people who passed you in the beginning of the race!
