Went to La Jolla Cove (check out the swim club) this morning for a swim like no other! Seals, waves, cold water, ankle attacking kelp — did I mention the seals and waves? It was not my prettiest swim. In fact, a friend suggested my face never went in the water. It did, twice. Who knew my doggy paddle drills from Tuesday would come in handy? I was fine with the cold, except my goggles kept fogging — there is a chance that some anxiety was making my eyeballs steamy! But that actually provided an opportunity to regroup, tread water and get over the claustrophobia I was experiencing from my wetsuit. I absolutely loved the seals, they actually swam all around me. It didn’t cross my mind until later that seals are food for large, carnivorous sharks, and OMG, what if a shark mistook me for a seal? I think my technique, or lack thereof, would have counted me out as an unappealing seal, so I was safe.
Trying something like this swim was a great reminder that training isn’t everything. Mix it up, play and live a little. I’m forever glad I did. Wait, did I tell you about the seals?!
