Swallowing an over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen, before a race might seem like a good way to prevent some pain, but it’s actually quite dangerous. A study out of the Netherlands found increased trauma in the intestines, and research on runners at the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run revealed colon issues and increased inflammation—pretty much the opposite of what you might want!
