For years, running brands have been creating special-edition shoes with a design theme to celebrate the world’s biggest marathons—including the New York City Marathon, the world’s largest. These aren’t vagabond shoes as Frank Sinatra once crooned about, but instead these special make-up (SMU) models are souvenir editions of each brand’s top-selling models.
The New York City design motifs are aimed at marathoners eager to mark their participation in the five-borough race through the Big Apple with a unique memento, a pair of shoes that can be cherished and preserved in pristine condition forever or worn with inspiration during a future training block. And, yes, there are some runners who ignore the unwritten rule of not wearing new running shoes purchased at a marathon expo and actually wear them in the race.
Here is a rundown of the this year’s NYC-themed shoes released in advance of the November 3 New York City Marathon that New Balance, Topo Athletic, and Saucony will be selling at the race expo at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from October 31-November 2 and at selected retailers around the city. Not going to New York City for the marathon this year?
