The 11th annual Xterra Trail Run World Championship saw both of its 2017 victors successfully defend their titles on December 2. Dani Moreno of California won the 21K race in 1:41:09 and was followed closely by former two-time champion Polina Carlson of Hawaii and Taylor Ward of Utah. “I’m stoked I got to defend my championship,” Moreno said in an official press release. “It was definitely the hardest race I’ve run this year with a truly great field of women. I was excited to race with them because they all bring something different to the table.”
In the men’s race, Joe Gray of Colorado secured his fourth course win in 1:23:08, followed by Xterra Trail Run National Champion Brett Hales of Montana and Andy Wacker of Colorado.
The championship route, which winds through Oahu, Hawaii’s Kualoa Ranch—a popular filming site that’s been used in movies like Jurassic Park and Godzilla—is typically unavailable to the public but was open over the weekend to race participants.
