In 1998, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series made history when it sent 20,000 runners to the streets of San Diego for its first-ever marathon. Now, celebrating 20 years of running, the popular series spans across dozens of cities all over the world. It closes The Strip at night, runs through the nation’s capital, crosses the Golden Gate Bridge, dances through Music City and boasts courses with some of the most epic views. But it all started with one idea in America’s Finest City 20 years ago.

On Jan, 11, the team at Rock ‘n’ Roll launched the first of several “Milestones” videos sharing the historical story of just how that first race changed the game of running—and how the race continued to grow. If you have no idea just how influential that little big race was many years ago, you have to watch this.
