The Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco Houston Half Marathon introduced an exciting start to 2018 when they were held this past weekend, on January 14. Both races have a 13-year history of selling out well before race day–and with the weather settling in at sub-freezing temperatures before the races began, we can understand why so many of this year’s competitors ran so quickly! For the marathon, Bazu Worku of Ethiopia won the men’s race for the third year in a row, while Biruktayit Degefa of Ethiopia won the women’s race to capture her second Houston title. As Ruti Aga of Ethiopia was winning the women’s half marathon with a time of 1:06:39, Molly Huddle was setting a new American record for the distance, beating Deena Kastor’s nearly 12-year record of 1:07:34 by nine seconds. New Zealander Jake Robertson won the men’s half marathon race in 1:00:01.
