After more than 10 years of hosting one of the most anticipated race registration lotteries, lighting up the streets of San Francisco and handing out those coveted Tiffany necklaces to finishers, the Nike Women’s Half Marathon will not be returning to Union Square in 2016. Their popular Nike+ Run Club events, however, will still continue to spice up the City by the Bay.
“Nike invites all runners to run with us in San Francisco through our various Nike+ Run Club offerings,” said a Nike spokesperson. “Although the Nike Women’s Event Series races will not take place in San Francisco in 2016, we’re committed to continuing to create the most innovative, motivating and exciting running and training events and look forward to announcing new destinations and experiences for the 2016 series early next year.”
This year’s event hosted around 20,000 runners in October, marking the 12th year of the 13.1-miler running through its original city of San Francisco. The event has seen many celebrity elites sponsored by the race organizer, including legend Joan Benoit Samuelson, Shalane Flanagan, Jordan Hasay and Alexi Pappas. The Nike+ program in the city is still offering group runs before the end of 2015.
