I’ve relied on running as my main source of outside adventure for so long that I almost forgot how many other ways I could enjoy the great outdoors. But now that I work for a company called Outside, it’s clearly time to expand my horizons.
When we were asked to pinpoint our favorite Outside+ perk (which affords our members, like you, access to basically anything you could want or need to learn more about the activities you enjoy most), I had a hard time coming up with just one. I love the recipes at Clean Eating and I have used them long before we were joined under the same umbrella. I enjoy keeping tabs on the latest news at Triathlete, even though I haven’t raced a triathlon in a decade. The GAIA app is just amazing—no worries about getting lost on my next trail run.
But what I have come to relish most about my Outside+ curated feed is that I get to pick what I see based on my interests. I’m a novice at yoga, backpacking, and uphill skiing, but guess what? Now I have access to all the beginner guides, pro tips, and gear recommendations I need from Yoga Journal, Backpacker, and Ski. I feel so less one-dimensional now when I open my Outside+ page.
As runners we can certainly get stuck in our routines and I often need to be shaken right out of them. I would have never tried meditation if the option hadn’t been right there, in my feed. Perhaps I would have tried re-gluing my backcountry ski skins if I hadn’t seen this the other day (doubtful only because I am not that ambitious, but now I know why I shouldn’t). I’m always looking for tricks to get a better night’s sleep, and I found some good ideas here.
You get the point. We’re runners first, of course. But we can and should do more, whenever we get the chance. Quick access to everything you need to try something new makes it a whole lot less intimidating. I’m enjoying being a beginner again. So here’s to moving in new ways, Outside.
