In 1994, Oprah Winfrey ran her first marathon and inspired the world who watched thanks to the television crews documenting her run. Here are some facts about her first time running 26.2 that may surprise you.

ONE: Two members of the paparazzi were so intent on getting exclusive shots of Oprah during the race that they ran the entire event with her.

TWO: Oprah was originally slated to run her hometown Chicago Marathon, but got antsy in the weeks leading up to the race and decided to run the Marine Corps Marathon instead, which was held the week before Chicago.

THREE: Oprah lost 72 pounds in the process to reach her goal racing weight of 150 pounds.

FOUR: After finishing the marathon, Oprah said, “It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s better than an Emmy, I tell you.”
