If you want to explore an entire country with your trail shoes and a backpack, put Andorra (all 181 square miles of it) atop your bucket list. Nestled high in the Pyrenees, between Spain and France, this mountainous gem of a nation is abundant with welcoming and adventure-loving runners, hikers, cyclists and climbers. The well-established hut-and-trail system is easy to navigate and perfect for a multi-day adventure. Or for those wanting more support, test your legs and lungs at one of the five races in the Andorra Ultra Trail (andorraultratrail.com). The 2016 event takes place July 14–17 and includes races from 10K to 170K. With no prize purse, the focus is personal achievement and taking in the views—from lush meadows to slushy glaciers to rocky mountaintops. But get ready to climb: The 10K alone has almost 2,500 feet of ups, while the 170K has 44,000!
