Women Who Run – Ten Minutes to Ten Miles

On occasion, I enjoy posting quotes from real women runners. Whether
barely a beginner, an experienced elite, or any level in between, all of us
gals are bound together by the common themes of our running experience.

I will never forget my first run. My
co-worker suggested that I run for ten minutes, stretch, and then run another
ten minutes. I was taken aback by how short this would be. I was
accustomed to riding for three hours, no problem (I was on the cycling team in
college), so surely I could run for twenty minutes. Wow, was I in for a rude
awakening!  While I felt pretty decent right after my run, I could barely
walk for the next three days. I wondered how I was ever going to make myself
put on my running shoes again. But once I could walk normally, I couldn’t shake
my determination and I ventured back out.  Throughout the course of the
next year, I went from being able to run only ten minutes without stopping to
running upwards of ten miles – and I have never looked back. Thank goodness I
didn’t let that first run discourage me! – Brooke, 28
