Much is written
about running shoes, but what about the socks that lie underneath? The wrong
pair of socks can lead to a misfortunate mess of blisters and discomfort, while
a sock that is perfectly paired with the correct shoe can be the icing on the
cake of running comfort. Granted, some trial and error is necessary to find
exactly the right sock style to suit your individual needs, but I’ll happily
share a few of my favorites to give you a starting point for further
The brand that
inhabits the majority of real estate in my sock drawer is Wigwam. I’m a
die-hard fan of their Ironman Lightning Pro Low-Cut model. While the frill-free
look is a bit boring, I enjoy the lightweight yet durable quality and the
low-cut length that ideally suits my personal style.
Another sock brand
that tops my list of favorites is SockGuy. With numerous clever and catty
women’s specific graphics, they’re hard not to love. They also offer Save the
Ta-Tas and Cancer Sucks designs, the proceeds of which benefit breast cancer
awareness organizations. And best of all, the superb fit and functionality of SockGuy
socks equal their fashion flair.
Rounding out my top
three is DeFeet – more widely known in cycling circles but equally appropriate
for running. With a lightweight, bulk-free fit that meshes perfectly with any
running shoe, and excellent moisture transfer, these socks are certainly a
contender. Check out the Chantilly Lace for a subtly feminine look, or
the Girls Rule – Boys Drool design for a heavy dose of sass.
