If you can’t find a running club that fits your schedule or
style, or if you’ve outgrown your current coach and want to take your fitness
challenge to a fresh new level, why not start your own group?

My friend Nilda and several of her running companions did
exactly that – founding New York City-based Black Sheep Runners. After training
for a few years with a prior coach who helped them attain their goal of
finishing a marathon, Nilda and her pals felt ready to step up the pace with a program
tailored to their specific needs. They formed a committee, interviewed a
handful of talented coaches and hired one who offered the exact type of
structure, training programs and commitment they desired. Within six months of
the initial inspiration, Black Sheep Runners became a full-fledged running club
registered with New York Road Runners. The club boasts non-profit status, and
its 27 members benefit from twice-weekly coached workouts, an interactive
website and a true feeling of ownership and accomplishment. The club’s logo is
awfully cute to boot, and graces the member’s singlets as well as motivational
signs used while cheering each other at a variety of local and national races.
