On
occasion, I enjoy posting quotes from real women runners. Whether barely a
beginner, an experienced elite, or any level in between, all of us gals are
bound together by the common themes of our running experience. – Holly Bennett
My
first inspiration to run was to be able to finish a local race, the Santa Cruz Wharf to
Wharf, in 1977. It was a six-mile race that seemed a HUGE undertaking. My aunt
promised to give me $20 if I finished. I don’t think she believed I would ever
make it to the end.
The
race went by in a flash. It was all so new to me. I was like a kid in a candy
store – stopping at every aid station, listening to the bands on the route,
enjoying the ocean as I ran along the coast. I finished, grinning from ear to
ear, and got $20 for my effort! Little did I know it would be the start of
something that would last over 30 years (and still running strong). I no longer
get paid to run – but I love it and have no intention of ever stopping! – Deb,
