Want to know the fastest way to create a personal stinky sauna? Head outside for a run on a steamy, hot day at high noon with a 100% cotton t-shirt on. In seconds, you’ll feel the sweat begin to drip uncontrollably and inevitably finish smelling anything but rosy.
Lucky for us, the evolution of performance clothing equals fabrics that wick away sweat to keep us cool and comfortable. In turn, we don’t immediately smell the workout funk that often accompanies a hard training session. While we’re thankful for the high-tech material, it’s important to know the best way to clean it in order to avoid funky smelling clothes.
Here are a few things you can do lengthen the life of your workout gear:
- Before throwing your sweaty clothes in the washing machine, make sure they are completely dry. Odor causing bacteria multiply like crazy in moist environments. Put an end to bacteria growth by air drying clothes soaked with sweat.
- Use a detergent made specifically for performance clothing. One of our favorites is Roux Maison’s Sport Detergent. It is scientifically formulated to clean your clothes without any harsh chemical allergens, toxins or irritants. Plus, we LOVE the amazing fresh scents (we tested out Ambrosia and it’s heavenly!). - Wash clothing in cold water and air dry. Heat only helps stink-causing bacteria to breed. So, wash in cold water and hang clothes dry to freshen them fully.
We know how girls love clothing, so tell us- what’s your favorite article of workout gear that you want to protect from smelling funky?
