NCAA runner turned high school coach Hillary Kigar has an answer for all things training!
Coach Kigar’s Tip of the Month:
Why is it so hard sometimes to get off the couch and go run? Because the body likes to feel comfortable! This is also exactly why it’s important to train in an environment that is similar to what you will race in.
For example, if you are training for a road race, be sure to include plenty of runs on neighborhood streets. If you are doing a trail race, make sure that the first time you run on dirt isn’t race day! If you know there is going to be a big hill in your upcoming 5K, include hilly routes in your regular training runs, or pick a day to do hill repeats and practice conquering a hill multiple times.
The idea is that on race day you have little-to-no anxiety about the course as your body already knows what to do!
