My current countdown list:
- 4 days untils the new Women’s Running hits newsstands
- 6 days until the Olympic Track & Field Trials begins
- 42 days until the 2012 Summer Olympics commencement ceremony
Can you stand the anticipation? I know. Me neither. And the best part about these upcoming events is that they are all connected in one very special way. . . An incredibly talented woman runner will be headlining all three.

We are so honored to have the Olympic bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan grace our cover this month. Check out our behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot, accompanied by a few of the many reasons to love Shalane. . .
She’s super silly. When we asked Shalane to bring her bronze medal (from the ’08 Olympics) with her to the shoot, we weren’t sure how she’d react. Not only was she happy to bring it, she goofed around the entire morning, dancing with her medal to Kanye West and Maroon 5.
She refuels right. Those abs are no accident—Shalane runs over 100 miles per week while marathon training, and performs regular strength and core workouts as well. But she feeds her mileage properly. Before the shoot, Shalane tucked into an entire foot-long turkey sub, and was ready to go.
Oh yeah, she’s pretty fast, too. The winner in the Marathon Trials (held separately from the Track & Field Trials), Shalane will be a definite one-to-watch in London. She’s also running the 10,000 meters in the Track & Field Trials this July, in an effort to help pace her teammate Lisa Uhl toward a spot on the Olympic team.
I want to know, what are you excited about today? Follow me on Twitter @JessieSebor to let me know. I’ll be tweeting sneak peeks from the Sept/Oct cover shoot next week, and live coverage of the Olympic Trials the last week in June.
