Boston Marathon weekend kicked off yesterday morning with a parade of runners stampeding through Boston’s Back Bay to the finish in the B.A.A. 5K and Invitational Mile. The 10th annual B.A.A. 5K saw defending champion Buze Diriba of Ethiopia retain her title, finishing with a time of 15:22, while Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia just barely snagged victory in 13:42 for the men’s field over American runners-up Ben True and Tommy Curtin.
Meanwhile, another defending champion crossed the finish line victorious in the B.A.A. Invitational Mile for the women’s field. Nicole Sifuentes of Canada, an Olympian who set the current course record of 4:33.7 when she ran the Invitational Mile for the first time last year, led the field this time from start to finish, breaking the tape with an official time of 4:37.2. In the men’s race, American Drew Hunter won by less than one second with an official time of 4:08.02.
