A Truly Positive Impact

For those of us who run, we know what a truly positive impact running can have on our lives. Some of the changes are smaller, and some of them… well, they’re life altering!

A few weeks ago, we asked our Run Club members to send us stories of how running has been a positive influence in their lives. Here are a few of our favorites:


“Running has changed my life by making me realize that I am a strong, motivated woman when I set my mind to something.  Getting up every day to run and train for the events and for the causes I do makes me realize that even though I am one person, I can make a difference!”


“I have always “tried” to be a runner, but when my mom received the diagnosis of ovarian cancer I decided to really be serious.  I started training for my first half marathon to honor her.  When she passed away, our company became a sponsor of the Run for the Whisper for Ovarian Cancer.  Since then, I have converted many of my friends to “runners.”  I have helped many people get fit and change their life just by putting one foot in front of the other.”


“I have found that through running,  I have begun to understand that it is not just the goal that is important but the journey to get to that goal.  Running has helped me understand how to better appreciate the world around me and the people that inhabit it.  Running is life.”


“I was always active – kick boxing, aerobics and yoga….I never considered running until I was challenged by friend to run a half marathon. We trained hard and, with my sisters, ran our first half marathon 2 years ago.  I was hooked. The runners’ high is not a myth! Last year, we ran our first full marathon!  I look forward to many years of running with my friend and sisters!”


“Easy slow runs helped keep my sanity and show me that I was still alive during chemotherapy treatments — for two bouts with cancer. Prior to that, the serenity of my early morning runs practically wrote my dissertation–the best ideas came on the roads.”


“People ask me why I love running and my first response is the freedom and the feeling I get from it. I just love it. There are literally hundreds of reasons why running is good for you and has changed lives. For me, it’s about counting my blessings for this body God has bestowed upon me. No matter the injuries – auto or running – or health illnesses – bronchitis or asthma allergy – I never put a limit on myself. It makes me want to fight for what I love: running.

More so, my running has helped changed OTHERS’ lives. As a role model, so many friends and family members that were once inactive, have taken up running, starting with the Couch to 5k program and some have even gone all the way up to their first 21k and marathon!

I believe through doing, do we start to receive. And that to me, is the most powerful.”

“Due to a medical condition, I had to undergo a radical surgery that forever altered my body. Following the surgery, my self esteem plummeted. For years, I grieved my loss and struggled to come to terms with my new body and it was only after I began running that I was able to move out of the darkness and begin living again. Through running, I discovered a strength I didn’t know existed and rediscovered my love of self. Running has changed my life profoundly!”


“When I was younger, I said I wouldn’t run unless someone was chasing me.  So, I didn’t start running until my mid-30s (peer pressure, go figure).  At 39, I am now the healthiest and smallest I’ve ever been.  Running gives me the means to be a hot 40-year-old when my birthday rolls around in February!”
