From coffee and hot chocolate to pills and powders, mushroom supplements are everywhere. Made from shrooms with funky names like turkey tail, reishi, and lion’s mane, these products utilize fungi you won’t find in the produce aisle and are best consumed in supplement form. Their list of reported benefits includes immune support, inflammation reduction, and mood balance. Also called functional or medicinal mushrooms, they’ve been popular in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

“The evidence on mushroom supplements is limited and mixed,” Bazilian says. Outside of cordyceps, few studies have been done. Like any supplement, Bazilian recommends finding products that are GMP-certified, do third-party testing, and don’t have many “extras,” such as additives or binders. For food-based mushroom products, read the ingredient label and nutritional panel, just like you would any food. Also, make sure you enjoy the taste, Bazilian says. “Then you’re more likely to consume it frequently enough to see if you do experience any of the benefits you’re hoping for in the first place!”
