New Face (and Body) of Beauty

Aimee Mullins is pushing the boundaries of “traditional beauty” one stride at a time. Need some inspiration to lace up your shoes? Consider this: Mullins was born without fibular bones and, as an infant, had both of her legs amputated below the knee. She learned to walk using prosthetics, and then began to run. After becoming the first double amputee to compete in track & field in the NCAA while attending Georgetown University, Mullins set world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta. As an athlete, actor, model and the global ambassador for L’Oréal, Mullins is committed to changing preconceived notions about disabilities. “Running, and sports in general, allow me to find confidence within myself,” she says. “And confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can have. It is much sexier than any body part.”

Roll Your Eyes

Peeper problems? Runners of every age can experience eye irritation. Whether due to sleepless nights or sun damage, the smooth skin around our lids may sport unflattering fine lines. Rollerballs, one of the gentlest ways to soothe this skin, are rolling into drugstore aisles everywhere this season. Refresh sleepy eyes with the chamomile, rosemary and lavender in Glo Therapeutic Eye Fix Revitalize Treatment ($17, Christina Cosmeceuticals Silk S.O.S. Eye Serum ($76, reduces the appearance of  ne lines with silkworm lipids. The combination of witch hazel and aloe vera in The Body Shop Vitamin C Eye Reviver Duo ($22, improves skin tone and moisture. For added eye protection, don’t leave home without sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses!

On Trend Toes

Rethink the term “funky runners’ feet”! Give your toes a total makeover with a fashion-forward pedicure. First, apply a base coat like L’Oreal Colour Riche One Stop Base Coat ($6, drugstores) to prevent polish from chipping. Next, swipe on two coats of tangerine polish, dubbed the pigment of the year by global color authority Pantone. Try a formula in these citrus shades: OPI Nail Lacquer in Are We There Yet? ($8, salons), Essie Nail Polish in Tart Deco ($8, or RGB Nail Color in Coral ($16, Maintain your pedicure with a top coat like China Glaze No-Chip Top Coat ($9, Ulta stores), and wait a few hours before lacing up your running shoes and hitting the streets. Re-apply your top coat every two days to keep your toes looking terrific.

Key Ingredient: Marshmallow

You may have eaten them between two graham crackers or even toasted atop sweet potato casserole—but have you ever smoothed marshmallows through your hair? It may sound crazy, but marshmallow root extract is a sumptuous treat for your skin and strands. This natural emollient boasts intensely hydrating and softening properties. Modern Organic Products Molding Cream ($12, drugstores) uses marshmallow, licorice and orange extracts to give your hair a beautiful shine. Rose water and rose petal extract combine with nurturing marshmallow and jojoba oil in Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Firming Mask ($53, to restore your skin’s elasticity. Napoleon Perdis Marshmallow Foaming Makeup Remover ($25, gently removes the day’s residue thanks to marshmallow extract and allantoin.

Get Compression-Shorts Ready!

Let your legs have their moment in the sun. Just in time for running shorts season, two of our favorite skin savers have teamed up to give you the smoothest shave ever, no cream or gel required. The new Gillette Venus & Olay Razor ($10, drugstores) combines a five-blade,  flexible-head shaver with moisturizer from Olay. Simply wet the razor to release a light lather and even easy-to-nick spots will be satiny smooth. If shaving isn’t your style, Sally Hansen Simply Smooth Hair Remover ($11, drugstores) has a water-resistant formula that works to depilate while you shower for a mess-free, stress-free hair removal process in as little as three minutes.
