The Benefits Of Making Your Own Juice At Home

Though it isn't as convenient as grabbing a juice from the store or local cafe, it can prove to be healthier to make it yourself.

When it comes to drinking fresh, green juice, the only guarantee of exactly how much of what ingredients are in it is to make it at home. Of course it isn’t as easy as getting juice on-the-go from a cafe, but if you have your own juicer, it puts you in control.

I learned firsthand just how good actual fresh juice could be until I got my own HUROM juicer—which I usually have to wrestle away from my husband because he is hogging it while juicing oranges (he is from Florida, after all)—and Sunday afternoons have become my time to make some juice to keep in the fridge to jump start my Monday mornings.

“When looking for a juicer, you should first consider what kind you want and what you’re buying it for,” explains Minji Bang, development team at HUROM headquarters. “The most basic feature to know would be how much juice you get from your juicer (also known as yield).”

Slow juicers are what give you fresh-pressed, slow-squeezed juice from fruits and vegetables—and you can pretty much make any combination you can think of. My go-to includes celery, green apple, pear and cucumber (pictured above!). With my juicer, I simply cut everything into small pieces and the ingredients in, getting juice out of on spigot and dry pulp out of another.

When you’re juicing at home, the benefits are, of course, fresh ingredients and the ability to control how much sugar you’re consuming.

“Some people want to use ingredients that have been sitting in the refrigerator for a while and might want to make a big batch of juice so they don’t go to waste,” notes Bang. “But keep in mind that the longer the ingredients sit, the less water content they might contain, also resulting in less juice! Also, many fruits have higher (natural) sugar content which is something to keep in mind.”

The main thing to remember is that your juice won’t have preservatives like store-bought juices, so consuming it within 24 hours—if possible—is recommended.

When looking for a juicer, the price shouldn’t be the only thing you consider upon purchase. Look for long-lasting and environmentally-friendly products. “Even if it’s a bit pricier, looking for a product that uses durable, strong materials will last in the long run,” adds Bang.
