Shoe Review: The LALO Zodiac Recon Will Brave The Elements

With this shoe, you'll never miss a run because of snow all winter.

My LALO Zodiac Recon tactical footwear arrived just in time for Iowa’s first big snowstorm of the year—a perfect opportunity to put them to the test! While running through miles of snow and drifts up to two feet, my foot did not slip once due to the shoe’s superior grip. My entire thumb nail fits into the posterior treads and 3/4 of it into the forefoot treads.

Immediately I noticed the bare-bones look of the LALO’s upper. While the fit matches its appearance, a thicker pair of socks makes up for the less-than-snug feel, ideal for winter running when a pair of wool socks is a must! The thin upper is well-suited to conditions where the ability to dry fast is important. These shoes have a well-formed arch and sport a heel-to-toe drop that is smaller than some at 5mm.

What the shoe lacks in “cushiness” of upper and insole, it makes up for with a light ride provided by their Tri-Density Zodiac foam outsole. While the Recons aren’t my preference for road racing, they’ve quickly become my go-to for any dashing through the snow…or ice, mud, water, slush, and sleet (great week for testing!). They are also my outdoor winter running and trail racing choice.

These shoes will be the most comfortable for those who prefer a lot of cushioning in the arch and who enjoy a roomy fit (or thick socks). They are perfect for a mud run obstacle course, and are well-suited to trail and winter running.
