Photos Show How To Tell When It’s Time For New Shoes

Here are some clues to let you know it's time to get a new pair.

It’s hard to know when it’s time to retire your running shoes. Because runners strike with their foot in different ways, some go through shoes more quickly than others. A lot of this depends on the surface you run on and the type of stride you have. If you run on roads, you might need new kicks sooner than a trail runner.

Clinical Exercise Physiologist Brendan Rickert says, “It’s hard to tell when a runner needs a new pair of shoes. Keeping a log is a must.” Yes, logs are good for both miles run on your legs…and in your shoes. Rickert also says that if you start to have nagging injuries around the time you have run 300 miles in your shoes, they need to go. It’s essential to pay attention to the way your body feels; some runners can get away with more mileage before they toss a pair. Worn out sneakers can also result in muscle stiffness and fatigue, as well as injuries. According to Footworks, “When a shoe begins to break down, it creates an opportunity for injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, achilles’ tendonitis and knee pain.”

Below are three different diagrams examining Rickert’s shoe wear patterns. The sneakers below are shown at 350 miles (which he is still using), 500 miles (which he is no longer wearing) and a pair with zero miles. Like myself, he regularly runs on the road, which can run the rubber out faster. Pronation, as well as foot strike, can affect the wear patterns; pronation is the way your foot rolls inward when you walk or run. According to ASICS, “It is part of the natural movement that helps the lower leg deal with shock.” Because Rickert runs at a high level, his toe wear pattern is also very noticeable; therefore he uses a lot of force to push off the ground during runs.
