Des Linden’s hot take tweet earlier this year got us thinking: Are leggings really the best choice to run in? Running pants (or joggers) are currently more recognized as loungewear—comfy options for chilling on the couch, but maybe Linden’s shout out is just the energy they need to take their place among the go-to run staples.
Hot take: Team Running Pants > Team Tights

Leggings, as we all know, can be tight and restricting. (Not necessarily a neg—many of us have come to like that feeling,) The draw of a track pant style, however, is that the adjustable waist and looseness around the legs can be freeing and more comfortable. They are also usually made with the same fabrics as leggings, containing all the high-quality feel and technology that will keep you dry and cool.
Plus, track pants or joggers will give your activewear look a bit of a stylish upgrade with a streetwear spin that can take you straight from morning run to afternoon brunch with a different vibe than compression leggings.
Time to take a page out of Linden’s playbook? Here are six styles to try.
6 of Our Favorite Running Pants Out Right Now
Brooks Shakeout Pant | $80
Of course we’ve got to start with the pair that’s rumored to be Linden’s favorite of running pants. We can’t stress this enough: She really might be on to something. This pair was super comfortable during easy miles on brisk mornings. Zippers at the ankle keep these easy to put on and remove.
Tracksmith Run Commute Pant | $198
With a tailored look that fits in equally on the treadmill as they do in the boardroom. Made with stretch Merino wool, these have performance properties with a slimmer silhouette. Run to work, keep them on for a full day with a simple change of your top, bra, and shoes.
Old Navy Mid-Rise Breathe ON Jogger Pants | $30
A warning should come with these, do not sit on the couch until after your workout. So unbelievably comfortable these feel like the sweats you’ve had since college. The good news is the feather-soft fabric doesn’t only have four-way stretch but moisture-wicking technology to keep you dry, allowing you to log in the miles and then crash on the couch.
Athleta Run With It Pant | $98
A hybrid of the brand’s lightweight fabric, Featherweight Strech, and Supersonic fabric, made from recycled polyester, this pant for high-impact workouts. Long, short, or trail runs, these are built to last and support. Versatile to fit in at your work or even a post-workout brunch.
Janji Mercury Track Pant | $88
Equally cozy as they are performance-driven, the stretchy fabric has dependable protection in cold weather. Knit fabric transfers sweat and heat away from your legs. Ergonomic seaming with pockets that help warm your hands during chilly runs. A roomy back pocket will fit your wallet, phone, or gloves.
Rabbit Jogalongs | $85
If you are open to a looser cut bottom but prefer a fitted silhouette, then these joggers are worth a try. A flat waistband and a tapered leg keep these flattering. Two side pockets will hold any goods you need for your jog.
