Training through the winter is difficult. Mostly because you have to convince yourself to get out of your warm bed which, honestly speaking, is contrary to good sense. But winter training also has a way of making you feel like a badass; while people are home avoiding the cold, you are putting in work that will leave you in much better shape for the warmer months.
Below are 5 items that make my winter training more bearable.
I don’t usually run with headphones but when I do, I use the Springmoves app to help me stay injury-free and maintain a higher cadence. After all, one of the best ways to optimize performance is by working on increasing running cadence—or steps per minute (SPM)—and this app is a great tool to do just that. It allows you to select your desired cadence and then curates music to keep you on target.
Under Armour Balaclava
This all-in-one shirt plus balaclava is an essential winter running item to keep warm; don’t worry about looking like a bank robber.
I was recently given a Momentum wristband that says “live fearlessly” and a shoe tag that says “you got this”. I love having the boost of motivation when I’m on the run. Super light weight and waterproof, these items will remind you why you are out there and give you the boost you need even through the worst weather.
Under Armour Fat Tire Low Shoes
These shoes are basically indestructible. They are perfect for when it is raining or snowing because they are waterproof and offer great grip courtesy of Goretex.
A Good Book
This winter, I’ll be reading Drop the Ball, by Tiffany Dufu. I always pick (at least one) book to carry me through the winter. Drop the Ball is on my list this winter because of it’s incredible message: Tiffany Dufu urges women to embrace imperfection, to expect less of themselves and more from others—only then can they focus on what they truly care about, devote the necessary energy to achieving their real goals, and create the type of rich, rewarding life we all desire.
And lastly—a bonus item—the most important element of my winter training is my run club, Harlem Run (and the members in it). We meet every Monday and Thursday through the winter so I have no excuse! Knowing that there will be people waiting for me no matter what gives me a real sense of accountability and inspiration to show up.
