Last year was expected to be a bust for many nonprofits that rely on donations through running events. But as GiveSignup (the non-profit resource arm of RunSignup) reports, nonprofit events raised 67.4 percent more in donations in 2020 than in 2019.

Their report goes on to show that while the average value of donations decreased by about $10 per person, the volume of donations grew by over 100 percent. That number makes sense, with the economic hardship of the pandemic affecting so many people juxtaposed with the global connect through virtual platforms.

In-person racing is working its way back, but it also looks like virtual events are here to stay. And that shift is giving charities an opportunity to reach and engage with more donors.

These five philanthropic races will give you an opportunity to race for a cause in person or virtually from your own neighborhood in the month of July.

USO Four on the 4th

Running itself is a freeing feeling. Celebrate metaphorical and tangible freedom this Independence Day weekend (July 1–5) with this virtual fundraising race. Between $17 and $22 of the $35 registration fee will be donated to the USO for this 4-mile event. The USO supports military personnel and their families from the moment they join through their transition back to civilian life at the end of their service.

Virtual Right to Run

Celebrating America’s historic milestones also helps remind us that we have more work to do and further to travel still when it comes to equal rights. This virtual race celebrates the passing and ratification of the 19th amendment (in 1920) which gave women the right to vote. From July 12 to 26 you can choose to run a 5K, 19K, or half marathon. Racers are encouraged to donate to one of the pre-selected charities that benefit and empower women.

Run for Justice Virtual Run

Black Men Run and Latinos Run have teamed up to host this virtual 5K on July 17. Proceeds from the race will go to the ACLU and Equal Justice Initiative to further promote equity, fairness, diversity, human rights, and access to resources for BIPOC communities. It is the mission of the two running organizations promote health, wellness, and fitness in communities that are largely ignored.

Every Victory Counts Challenge

The entire month of July you can run (or ride or dance or swim or whatever your heart desires) for Parkinson’s research. The event was inspired by cyclist Davis Phinney and his mantra “every victory counts”—whether that victory is winning a race or completing a household chore. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to Parkinson’s research.

Children’s Heart Foundation Virtual 5K and Fun Run

The Children’s Heart Foundation is shooting to raise $50,000 this year to help fund research that advances the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of congenital heart defects. Run their virtual 5K on July 17 to be a part of their noble mission.
