Jordan Hasay Confirmed To Race Chicago This Fall

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon announced today that Jordan Hasay will return to Chicago for the 41st annual race, scheduled to take place on October 7. The 26-year-old raced to a third-place finish at last year’s Chicago Marathon after tackling the distance for the first time during the 2017 Boston Marathon, which she completed with the fastest marathon debut by an American woman with a time of 2:23:00. (She improved her own PR after crossing the finish line in Chicago last fall in 2:20:57.) Hasay, who runs for Nike Oregon Project, will return to the course alongside teammate Galen Rupp, who won the men’s division in Chicago last year.

“Galen won in a decisive move last year and just dominated a talented men’s field,” Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski said in an official press release. “Jordan ran with pure guts and she was rewarded with a podium finish and the fastest American time ever run on Chicago’s course. She has found her distance with the marathon.”

Today’s announcement came exactly one month after the 2018 Boston Marathon, which Hasay planned to run (and even stated three days before the race that she hoped to win) before unexpectedly dropping out the night before. An official announcement shared by the Boston Athletic Association’s sponsor John Hancock on April 15 cited a stress reaction Hasay endured earlier this year as the reason for her withdrawal. “After recovering from plantar fasciitis, and running pain free the past few weeks, her team wanted to ensure she was ready to go and scheduled an MRI today,” the statement read. “The results showed a stress reaction in the heel and her doctor and team have made the decision that Jordan needs to take time to recover fully so there is no long term injury.”

With Hasay’s placement in the elite field for Chicago now official and more than four months remaining before the race, it’s likely that Hasay will be able to recover in plenty of time to bring a strong performance to the Abbott World Marathon Majors course in October.

“I’m thrilled to be coming back to Chicago,” Hasay said in an official press release. “My goal is to target a fast time and contend for the win.”
