Just an hour after crossing the finish line at this year’s 2018 TCS New York City Marathon, the top three American finishers Shalane Flanagan (third), Molly Huddle (fourth) and Desiree Linden (sixth) attended a press conference to answer questions about their experience during today’s race, their admiration for winner Mary Keitany and what they’re each looking forward to accomplishing next.

The Race

“You have to find motivation, things to rally [around] and focus on. When I got dropped from Mary and some other women, I kept thinking, Keep fighting. You never know what’s going to happen in front of you. Just keep fighting for that podium spot….I felt really proud of myself that I kept fighting, even though there were some rough patches in there.” Shalane Flanagan

“It was great to not have any major hurdles as far as weather goes and just be able to race the marathon. It was a fast day out there; it was the opposite of Boston, weather-wise. Mary got close to the course record, and a lot of women ran fast…It was a solid race.” Molly Huddle

“I made some transitions this year, hoping to be a bit better at [pacing]….Honestly I thought I’d handled the second half really well. But I kept my foot on the gas the whole day, was able to catch two people. All in all, it was really solid; I think I’m going to get better, improve on that and make some adjustments.” Des Linden

Mary Keitany

“She’s going to go down as one of the greatest marathoners in history. The way she can execute and just really crush her competition over the last half of a race is incredible. She’s a rare athlete, one to be celebrated.” Shalane Flanagan

“When Mary makes a move, it’s such a hard move. I would probably label her as one of the only women who could go for the world record in the marathon.” Molly Huddle

“I watched the 2012 marathon from the press truck. When she pulled away from everyone that day, you knew you were watching something special. She’s only gotten better with more experience, with age. I think that’s the only word for her: incredible.” Des Linden

What’s Next

“I do feel like my heart is leaning toward serving others in the knowledge I’ve gained. It’s become swinging more in that direction than it is about my own running. I’ve had a lot of fun with my own running, but it’s getting more toward the time to serve others.” Shalane Flanagan

“I definitely want to run a spring marathon and try to run a faster course. I probably won’t run a fall marathon between then and the Olympic Trials Marathon. If I don’t make the Olympic Trials for the marathon, I’ll try the track.” Molly Huddle

“Next for me is lunch. I didn’t really think past today. I circled a big thing, put all the eggs in the basket. Now I’ll do lunch, recover and see where my head’s at.” Des Linden
