Sara Vaughn’s New Scholarship

Sara Vaughn wowed us all with her third place finish in the 1,500 meters at the USATF Outdoor Championships last month. After finishing seventh at the 2016 Olympic Trials, her performance at the Outdoor Championships on June 24 solidified her place on her first world team. Now, less than a month after taking her USA flag-draped victory lap, Mama Vaughn has announced that she and her husband are creating a scholarship for parents pursuing undergraduate degrees.

In an interview with FloTrack, Sara explained that the decision to create the scholarship was a personal one. When she and husband Brent were both pursuing bachelors degrees while on athletic scholarships at the University of Colorado, they became pregnant and decided to continue pursuing their academic and athletic goals—all while taking on the responsibilities of parenthood. Nearly 11 years after the birth of her first daughter, Kiki, Sara has graduated from college and reached a level of professional running reserved for the truly dedicated.

With this new scholarship, Sara hopes to help students in situations similar to those that she and Brent faced. “I’m really excited to give somebody an opportunity to keep going, like we were able to,” Sara said. Details regarding the name and the amount for the scholarship are still forthcoming, but Sara did explain that the money will be awarded to University of Colorado undergraduate students in need of childcare assistance. All of the prize money Sara earns this year will go toward the scholarship fund. In the future, she hopes to create a nonprofit with similar goals to help undergraduate parents with their childcare needs.

But first, Sara has the IAAF World Championships to look forward to. The events will start in just three weeks and will run August 5-13, 2017.
