Nat Runs Far shares her top five reasons for why runners should embrace the fall running and racing season.

Summer is a special time filled with endless sunshine, frolicking by the sea, early sunrise runs, lake life, evening barbecues and lots of special memories with friends and family. But starting today, it’s time to embrace the beautiful season of autumn. The Northern Hemisphere marks the autumnal equinox at exactly 4:02 p.m. EST and 1:02 p.m. PST.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac,

The autumnal equinox—also called the September equinox—is the astronomical start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

The word equinox comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night).

During the equinox, the Sun crosses what we call the “celestial equator”(just imagine the line that marks the equator on Earth extending up into the sky) from north to south.

Earth’s two hemispheres are receiving the Sun’s rays about equally. The Sun is overhead at noon as seen from the equator. At this point, the amount of nighttime and daytime (sunlight) are roughly equal to each other.”

In other words, fall is HERE.

5 Reasons Runners Love Fall

  1. There is a seemingly endless amount of exciting races to choose from in the fall. After the sweat and humidity of summer, we get to test out all of our hard training with cool, crisp morning races.
  2. Running through a huge pile of leaves on a cool morning.
  3. Fall foliage! Who can resist going outside to run among a sea of red, gold and orange?
  4. The season of Thanksgiving. This is the perfect time of year to grab a journal and write down what you’re thankful for each day. The act of gratitude can lift us up and grant us the freedom to become better, more confident runners.
  5. Apples! This is a glorious season to go apple picking and then return home to a cozy kitchen to bake lots of post-run healthy treats. Close your eyes and imagine the sound of crackling wood in the fireplace and the smell of apples cooking throughout the house…

Suddenly saying au revoir to summer doesn’t seem so sad, after all.
