See Why Kara Goucher Is Bringing Awareness To Distracted Driving

April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month and Goucher is hoping to keep both drivers and runners safe with an important reminder.

April is Distracted Driver Awareness Month and professional runner Kara Goucher is hoping the reminder will help keep both drivers and runners safe.

Yesterday on her social media, Goucher posted a photo of herself wearing a shirt that reads “I RUN THESE STREETS” as a reminder to her community—and beyond—that the safety of both drivers, cyclists, runners and pedestrians is imperative. She added, “Studies have shown that distracted driving is leading to more running, pedestrian and cycling injuries on our roads.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving qualifies as anything that can take a driver’s attention away from the road. The biggest culprit is cell phones and they share that during daylight hours, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones while driving.

Goucher has personal ties to the topic, as her father was killed by a drunk driver when she was just a young girl. That’s why this April she is joining DASH IT Fitness—athletic wear with an important message—to help drivers remember that they are sharing the roads. A percentage of every purchase of their shirt Goucher is rocking above is donated to campaigns against distracted driving in local communities.
