This past weekend in Boston, four U.S. Olympians—Emma Coburn, Sydney McLaughlin, Brenda Martinez and Jenny Simpson—set a new world record for the indoor 4,000-meter distance medley relay.
It was at the 22nd New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where they brought the record from the previous best of 10:42.57 to their new record of 10:40.31.
Coburn—who you may remember took bronze in the steeplechase in Rio—started off the race, running her 1200m leg in 3:18.40. They had a slight lead as McLaughlin started her 400-meter leg. She was passed but regained her lead once again and ran her leg in 52.32. Martinez was up next, and soon she ran alone and tried to make up time as she passed the baton to Simpson. The Rio Olympics bronze medalist took off for the final 1600-meters, finished in a blistering 4:27.66 to capture the record.
What did Simpson have to say about the performance?
