December is a glorious month. The season’s first snowflakes, cozy nights by the fire, and best of all, holiday desserts. Dozens and dozens of delectable treats that have their own delicious personalities, just like runners do. That’s right, I’m actually comparing runners to cookies, and maybe I’m just hungry, but hear me out. Running, just like dessert, can be full of different kinds of nuts, totally addicting, and while there’s nothing like a runner’s high, a sugar high comes pretty close. So it only makes sense that for every kind of runner, there’s a holiday dessert that pairs perfectly. Grab a sweet treat and see what I mean:
Sugar cookies are just like 5K runners. Making the cookies and running the distance are both fairly easy to do, don’t take much preparation, and while some snobs might say they’re boring, everyone secretly enjoys them.
Gingersnaps are a match for half-marathoners. Both know the importance of balance—the cookie is not too sweet and not too savory, while the distance is not too long and not too short. Both are perfectly proportioned and should have a nice kick at the end.
Biscotti are the marathoners of the cookie world. They both have tough exteriors and require lots of coffee.
Ten-layer, double-chocolate cake with mocha fondant, ganache drizzle and edible snowflakes is the running equivalent of the bragger. They both want you to know how awesome they are by filling your respective Pinterest and Facebook feeds with glamour shots of the cake or sweaty run selfies. #lookatme
Peppermint bark is the candy equivalent of winter runners. Both are cool customers who can handle an icy chill with a smooth finish.
No-bake cookies pair perfectly with sprinters. When you’re short on time, no-bakes can be prepared just as quickly as a runner can sprint 100 meters.
Fruit cake has a clear connection with trail runners. Both are sometimes underrated but they thrive on dried fruit and nuts and are tough as nails.
Chocolate espresso brownies are a mother runner’s best friend. They each can’t exist without chocolate, and without a shot of caffeine they’d both fall flat.
Peanut brittle is the sugar soulmate of the ultrarunner, with its hard shell that is tough to break. Plus you have to really like nuts to enjoy some brittle, and you definitely have to be a little nuts to enjoy an ultra.
