Team New Balance athletes will celebrate Global Running Day on June 6 with a virtual running relay.

Global Running Day: June 6, 2018

On Wednesday, June 6, athletes around the world will make an effort to get outside and move their bodies in celebration of Global Running Day. New Balance is one of many brands joining in on the fun, with several of its sponsored athletes confirmed to lead group runs and select storefronts hosting local community runs.

First launched in 2009, Global Running Day has become one of the most prominent days in the running world, recognized by brands and event companies with flash sales, group runs and a groundswell of social media support. In 2016, New York Road Runners introduced the Million Kid Run, a new element of the annual event that encouraged youth participation. Professional and everyday athletes alike return to Global Running Day every year, voluntarily announcing their pledges to run and sharing their experiences on social media.

Last year’s New Balance celebration started in Australia, where New Balance teammate Olivia Easton launched the global relay before passing the virtual baton along to Camille Buscomb in the Netherlands. The relay continued progressing through Europe before leaping over to the Americas, finally reaching its conclusion with members of the Big Bear Track Club in Southern California. This year’s event will start in New Zealand with Anita McLaren, after which several of her New Balance teammates (including Jenny Simpson and Emma Coburn) will take the virtual baton before the relay culminates with runners Dominic and Katie Grossman in Wrightwood, Calif.

Many brands and event companies associated with the running world are participating in this year’s Global Running Day on some level. As New Balance coordinates its team of athletes to run across the globe, New York Road Runners is hosting a “Global Running Day Happy Hour” in collaboration with New Balance, while Under Armour will host the second iteration of its #RunnersDayOff social media campaign. Other companies are donating money to charities, like Road Runner Sports’ Athletes Helping Athletes promotion, and countless brands are also offering discounts for running shoes, apparel and accessories. To learn more about which branches of the running industry are participating, visit the Global Running Day website—and don’t forget to tag #GlobalRunningDay when you post about your participation on social media tomorrow!

Editor’s Note: This piece originally reported that Big Bear Track Club teammates Brenda Martinez and Allen Eke would join in the final leg of the virtual relay. As of June 5, Boris Berian will be the only Big Bear Track Club member to join in running the final leg.
