Saturday, Feb. 6, is Declare It Day and women are rallying—both in person and virtually—to help each other set goals and follow through. Everyone is invited to participate in this annual event, organized by Fellow Flowers, a community that supports women who run, and in partnership with Women’s Running.
As runners, we know that a race on the calendar makes daily workouts so much easier. But what if you approached the other goals in your life in the way you think about training? Sure, there are those New Year’s resolutions, but darned if they don’t recede into the background of life too soon. Here’s another chance to set intentions for 2016.
Your declaration can certainly be related to running or fitness, or you can set goals for anything else. Founders of Fellow Flowers Mel Charbonneau and Tori Sager began the organization after 13 friends trained and ran a half marathon together. They witnessed the transformative powers of running and the life-changing support that women can give each other.
“Your goal doesn’t have to be crossing a finish line,” says Charbonneau. “Make it what you need to make it.” She adds her number-one tip: “Keep it simple.” And Sager concurs, to help get over any feelings of intimidation, whether about setting a goal or even taking the time to focus on yourself.
The first Declare It Day was four years ago and about 350 women participated. Year two welcomed 1,500 and year three blossomed to 10,000. This year Charbonneau and Sager expect even more. The official declaration went online today, so you can download it now to prepare for Saturday.
There will be gatherings of like-minded goal setters in locales such as Madison, Wisc., Phoenix, Seattle, Boston and Chicago (see the website for a complete list), but Fellow Flowers also encourages participants to gather with their own friends on the day to share goals—and ultimately help each other be accountable.
And everyone will come together over social media. No doubt, #declareitday will be trending.
