Nike Cross Nationals is an annual cross-country meet that brings together the best high school runners from all over the country to race in Portland, Oregon. One of the perks of the meet weekend is the chance to meet Nike sponsored elite runners. One high school student used this benefit to his advantage.
During a Q&A with Nike athletes, Max Lehnhardt, a senior at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Illinois, delighted the audience when he asked steeplechaser Colleen Quigley to prom. Runner’s World was able to get the video that shows Lehnhardt walking onto the stage, getting down on bended knee and offering his promposal.
While Quigley was flattered, Runner’s World reports that she isn’t certain she can accept. The prom is close to Olympic Trials, where she has a shot to make the team in Rio, and her coach, Jerry Schumacher, would not want to jeopardize her training.
Meanwhile Lehnhardt’s team finished 4th, just off the podium. But he did leave the weekend with a prize—Quigley’s phone number, which he has promised not to give to any of his teammates.
