Here Comes The Sun

May always heralds a sense of renewal and possibility, with everything that has been dormant through the winter now bowing under the weight of fragrant blooms and new growth. It’s a heartening reminder that even when things may feel bleak and unchanging, the seeds of potential and hope are always lying just out of sight, and given enough time, they will eventually burst forth with unexpected beauty and vigor.

So if your running routine or race training has gotten off track, now is the perfect time to lace up your shoes and get back out there to soak up the springtime blossoms and put in some quality miles. We’ve created a guide to help you focus on the most important fitness goals by decade on page 24, so use this to help focus your training this year.

This month we feature the indomitable Deena Kastor on our cover. One of the most renowned runners in American history, her outlook on life is just as inspiring as her many running achievements and accolades. Read her profile on page 48 to gain some insight and perspective on how not only to be a better runner, but also a more balanced and content person.

All those gorgeous springtime runs will have you working up an appetite, so check out the quick and family-friendly recipes we’ve rounded up for you on page 40.

May also gives us the chance to celebrate the most important women in our lives—mothers. Whether biological or chosen, mothers offer us love, wisdom and encouragement, all essential elements to helping us become strong women. We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite things to help you celebrate the moms in your life on page 9.

Take some time to get outside and enjoy the colorful show that Mother Nature is putting on this month, and remember to spend some quality time with your mom!
