Des Linden Confirmed To Race NYC

New York Road Runners announced this week that Boston Marathon champion Desiree Linden will race this year’s TCS New York City Marathon. Linden raced to victory amid near-freezing conditions in the wind and rain at this year’s Boston Marathon in April, becoming the first American woman to win the title in 33 years in the process. This will be her second time attempting the New York City course, which begins in Staten Island and travels through all five of the city’s boroughs before finishing in Central Park. Linden’s first time on the course was in 2014, when she secured a fifth-place finish.

Linden broke the news on June 27 via a video post on the TCS New York City Marathon Instagram account. “At the moment, it felt like it was the culmination of my career,” Linden said of the Boston Marathon in an official announcement, “but I believe I still have plenty more to give to the marathon. I’m thrilled to head to the TCS New York City Marathon this fall. I’m motivated to get back on the big stage that NYRR will undoubtedly put together and intend to make a name for myself in another great city.”

Linden’s announcement came just days after Michelob Ultra, one of the NYC Marathon sponsors, announced that it is partnering this season with Shalane Flanagan to coach 95 runners to the finish at this year’s marathon on November 4. Flanagan, who played a significant role in the wave of American female dominance in endurance running by securing her NYC Marathon win last year—the first time an American woman won the title in 40 years—is still undecided as to whether she’ll return to the course to race this November. “If I don’t line up with all the runners, I certainly will be at the finish line,” Flanagan told Women’s Running last week. “It’s a really memorable day to people, so if I can’t run or if I decide not to race, I will certainly be there to greet runners.”

This year’s NYC Marathon is still 18 weeks away, but running fans throughout the country are already starting to look forward to the excitement that the race promises to bring. Follow along throughout the summer and into the fall as Women’s Running delivers additional updates on this year’s road to New York City.
