The running world was hit with some shocking news on Monday afternoon—2016 Olympian David Torrence was found dead in a swimming pool at an apartment complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., that morning. He was 31 years old.

Torrence was from California and he ran at UC Berkeley. He was sponsored by HOKA ONE ONE and originally trained to represent the U.S. at the Rio Olympics. He ended up switching to Peru, where his mother holds citizenship. He made the 1,500-meter final at the 2016 Olympics and recently set Peruvian national records in the 1,500 and mile. He had recently come to Arizona on a training trip.

Friends and fans posted some of their favorite memories of Torrence on Twitter after hearing the news—fellow Hoka athletes Stephanie and Ben Bruce shared memories of Torrence spending time with their two small boys. Other athletes and track fans also celebrated his many accomplishments on the track. You will be missed, David—you were one of the best.
